Photographing Christmas Lights in Southwest Florida

Peggy Farren 2013-12-19

Ho ho ho! My favorite part of Christmas is all the holiday lights!! Here are a few tips for taking photos:

Photography holiday lights at at dusk before it gets really dark. At dusk you can balance the ambient light with the lights for a pleasing picture. If it's dark, you may only get the lights and everything else will go black. Unless of course you find houses that are lit up completely!

HDR is a very cool look for holiday lights as well. Take 3 to 5 different exposures and merge them together using Photomatix or other software. JoeFitzpatrick HDR Christmas lights

If you want to blur the lights out in the background, use a wide aperture. Use a tiny aperture, such at F22, you can achieve the starbust effect! You will definitely need a tripod for this shot! JoeFitzpatrick Holiday Lights Tree

Here are a few great places in Southwest Florida for Christmas lights:

Fort Myers: Burroughs Home – hurry – this one closes on December 23. Edison & Ford Winter Estates Holiday Nights runs through January 4. 1536 Pinecrest Rd

Bonita: Flesher Farm at 27865 Bonita Grand Drive

Naples: Third Street south – go on a Thursday for SNOW. Victoria Park – it must be a requirement to live in this neighborhood to go crazy with lights!

Wear bright color clothes so you don't get hit by a car!! Most of all – have fun!!
